Barnardo, Thomas

Barnardo, Thomas
(1845–1905)
   Educator and Philanthropist.
A native of Dublin, Ireland, Barnardo joined the Plymouth Brethren in 1862 and came to London in 1866 to qualify as a physician. He was appalled by the number of destitute children he found on the city streets and he set up his first Home for Boys in 1870. The organisation grew rapidly. By 1876, he had attracted sufficient notice and funds to build a model village for homeless girls. From 1882 he began to send children to the British colonies abroad. This aspect of his work has attracted considerable criticism in recent years, but he genuinely believed that there were better employment prospects there. By the time of his death, nearly sixty thousand children had been admitted to his institutions. The work continues today, although increasingly the organisation recognises that adoption and fostering are better alternatives for parentless children.
